Penfolds Grange: The Wine You Know, The Journey You Don’t
The winemaker
Max Schubert’s sheer dedication, unflinching determination, penchant for invention and passion to make a name for himself in the Australian wine industry all in tandem gave birth to the most revered wine range of Penfolds, which is Grange.
History of Penfolds Grange
The history of Penfolds Grange dates back to 1948 when Max became the first chief winemaker in Penfolds at the age of 33 and later gallivanted across Europe to learn various winemaking techniques followed in Portugal and Spain. However, his visit to the Bordeaux region of France had what made all the difference and he made up his mind to craft a wine that’s ‘different and lasting’ along the lines of French cellared-style wines. In his pursuit of raw material, Shiraz was his first choice for the grape variety and it was in 1951 when the very first experimental wine of Grange came into being.
Journey of Penfolds Grange
Max’s journey of crafting premium Grange had its share of setbacks when renowned wine connoisseurs of Sydney disapproved of the wine and he was forced to put the project on hold. But it was his unwavering perseverance to carve his own path to success that kept him going and he continued to create Grange vintages clandestinely. Eventually, Max got permission to resume the production of Grange and since then there has been no looking back. Grange bagged international awards and received recognition, so much so that its 1990 vintage was named Wine Spectator’s Red Wine of the Year in 1995.
International Accolades Received by Penfolds Grange
No wonder Penfolds Grange is one of the most celebrated wines across the world and it continues to enjoy a good reputation to date. The wine celebrated its 50th birthday back in 2001 and received the present of being officially recognized as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. That’s not all; the 2008 vintage of Grange attained a perfect score of 100 points by two of the most esteemed wine magazines in the world. Each vintage of Penfolds Grange is the epitome of the remarkable vision and strength of Max Schubert.
Penfolds Grange 2018
Made from fully ripened, immensely flavoured and structured grapes of Shiraz varietal, the 2018 vintage of Penfolds Grange deserves all the praises and recognition from across the world. The wine conspicuously manifests the harmony between shiraz and the terroir of South Australia. Dressed in a radiant red colour with a black hue at the core, the wine unfolds pleasing fruity aromas of ripe blackberries entwined with spicy notes of anise and fennel. Topping them off are dashes of cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Blatant scents similar to that of charcoaled lamb fat further add to the authenticity of Shiraz. Complex yet subtle earthy notes define the nose of this full-fledged powerhouse delicacy.
Flavours of trifle or rather black forest cake with evident tastes of custard, chocolate, redcurrant and raspberry form the primary tasting notes of this classy shiraz. However, the toothsome distractions of mushroom pâté or duxelles accompanied by a beefy smack gives an edge to the wine palate, not to mention the sarsaparilla notes thrown into the mix. Also, a medley of fresh black and red liquorice is a delightful surprise element for the mouth. When it comes to the aftertaste, a conflux of balanced tannins and acidity leads to a lingering and lengthy finish of the wine. Pour the wine into a glass and let it come in contact with the air to see it truly coming alive.
