MITOLO ANGELA SHIRAZ: RED THAT TASTES HEAVENLY
The Story Behind Mitolo
The roots of Mitolo Wines go back hundreds of years via several generations of viticulturists. The Mitolo family, originally from the Abruzzo region of Italy, immigrated to Australia in the 1950s with an utter attachment to its homeland and an indomitable spirit. Manifesting Abruzzo’s motto of ‘forte e gentile,’ which translates to strong and gentle, the winery has been endeavouring to create excellent wines displaying elegance and character. Each wine that belongs to the range is proof of how the Italian-Australian heritage is engrained profoundly in Mitolo’s Wines.
The year 2000 witnessed the winery making its first-ever Shiraz and just two years later, came up with its first Cab Sav. And since then, there was no turning back; Mitolo Wines has mastered these two varieties, fruits for which are solely sourced from some of the finest vineyards of McLaren Vale. While making a name for itself in the world of wines as a brand for premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines, the winery continued to expand its range to incorporate other Italian varieties showing admiration for its familial origins.
Mitolo Wines opened its Osteria and Cellar Door in 2017. Sitting pretty by the side of Turraparri Creek, overlooking the mighty Mount Lofty Ranges and surrounded by scenic vineyards, it’s a serene place that’s a treat for the sore eyes, food for the soul and heaven for wine lovers.
Mitolo Angela Shiraz 2019
Flooded with the relishing traits of ripe plum fruit, the 2019 vintage of Mitolo Angela Shiraz stimulates the palate with savoury notes of ground coffee, earth and cedar. Flavours of this concentrated and bold red seamlessly blend with bright acidity and fine-grained tannins.
Winemaking Technique of Mitolo Angela Shiraz 2019
Grapes were destemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters and pumped over at least once on a daily basis for ten consecutive days. After fermentation, the process proceeded towards four days of maceration. To keep the colour, tannins and flavours of this Shiraz intact and to retain its authentic fruit characteristics, the ferment had been kept cool throughout the process. After being pressed, the wine was transferred to 80% France-originated seasoned oak hogshead and the remaining 20% to the new one for natural malolactic fermentation and maturation for 16 months. Racking was used to clarify the final blend, and the wine was bottled without filtration or fining.
The Vineyard of Mitolo Angela Shiraz 2019
Settled on the southern end of the McLaren Vale region in the vicinity of the seaside town Willunga, Lopresti Sandra’s Block Vineyard is from where the fruits for this bold 2019 vintage Shiraz were sourced. The soil types here range from Biscay clays to alluvial clay loamy soils of Christies Beach and consist of rock and gravel fragments. Sea breezes moderate the daytime heat in summer and during the crucial ripening period.
