History of Angove Family Winemakers
Angove wines was founded by Dr William Thomas Angove in the year 1886. He was a British immigrant who came to Australia and settled down in the Tee Tree Gully, a small city in South Australia that lies in Adelaide foothills. Although a medical practitioner, he also started to experiment with winemaking which he used as a tonic for his patients. In 1800s, he began with planting vineyard on 10 acres of land, for producing fortified and table wines. The hobby soon started making a good business as his wines in short span of time developed a great market.
Later his son Thomas ‘Skipper’ Carlyon Angove entered the business, and despite of the 2 World Wars, he managed to build a multi-regional wine company from a small venture. During this time, there diverse and fine wines also started getting exported to international markets, while enjoying a good customer base in across Australia. In 1910, he established a new winery in Renmark which was the first one in Riverland wine region.
This tradition was followed by the third generation winemaker, Thomas William Carlyon Angove who introduced major developments like expansion of processing & crushing facilities. He also planted vineyards across SA which included Nayna (the largest of that time in Southern Hemisphere). Earning a reputation for the production of finest wines, in 1994, he received an Order of Australia for the extraordinary service to wine industry.
In 1983, the business was succeeded by fourth generation John Carlyon Angove as Managing Director of Angove wines and in 2001, became the chairman of the company. John has also been an Executive Councillor to the Winemakers Federation of Australia (WFA) since inception in 1989 and still continues to hold the position. He has also serves as Vice President to South Australian Wine Industry Association (SAWIA) and as President for 3 years. He is accredited for making significant investment and development in every aspect of their family business.
Present Day
Now, the Angove Family Winemakers is run by fifth generation of the family. Following her father’s footsteps, Victoria Angove joined the family business in 1997. She had a fascination for wines from a very early age. After completing her Commerce degree, she worked with the marketing and sales team where she worked upon the company’s exports, domestic sales, public relations and marketing. At present, she’s the Joint Managing Director of Angove wines along with brother Richard Angove in 2017.
Richard joined the business in 2008, and has an inclination towards organic grape growing, sustainability and organic wines. Before joining business he worked with many other wineries to gather experience and was in the judging panel at Adelaide Wine Show, Great Australian Shiraz Challenge and Victorian Wine Show.
