A Short Note on Gapsted Wines
Established in 1996, Gapsted wines are situated near Myrtleford, Victoria’s High Country. The cool climate vineyards of Alpine Valley and Kings Valley produce premium grapes which are used in creating these award-winning Gapsted wines. The winery is a melange of innovation and classic producing both contemporary grape wine like Petit Manseng and Saperavi along with the classic Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietals.
The Story behind Gapsted Wines
This company is a result of the willingness of seven families in winemaking industry who decided to take upon a venture together. The founding partners- Jim Moularadellis, Bill Moularadellis, Shayne Cunningham, John Cavedon, Richard Carson, Kevin Murtagh and the Bailey family came together to discuss this venture because of their common interests for this wine region. Having different sets of talents, skills and personalities, they finally came down to single the idea of producing wines with “excellence”.
In 1996, the winery was founded. The families saw a great potential in this region to grow aromatic, elegant, stunning and complex red and white wines. Along with proximity to the best fruit growing region, the place beholds alluring alpine views making it ideal location for winery.
Their cellar door was built in 2001 and over the years, the winery has developed and gained tremendous success.
The wine region
Located in the marvellous Alpine and Kings valley, the region is surrounded by some major ski fields of Victoria. Sharing its borders with Kiewa, Ovens, Buckland and Buffalo Valleys, the region has an inherent cool climate. The high altitude, alpine breezes, cool climate, high rainfall, snow run-off during spring, morning fogs, cold nights and abundant freshwater provide the vines an ideal environment to grow. Working on this unique wine region, their aim is produce high quality and affordable wines for the consumers.
Awards
Over the years, the winery has achieved various awards including ‘Best Alpine Winery’ for consecutively six years and the ‘best winery cellar door’ by the Victorian Tourism Awards. Winning 26 Trophies and 83 Gold Medals till now, their wines are acknowledged both on national and international levels.
